Memories of Army Days

It’s 1967, Bruce and I are driving to Ft. Rucker, Alabama – it was our honeymoon! While in the army, we were sent to new homes along with so many couples. We were all young. It was easy to make friends fast, but those friends had bonds that were very strong. For his final assignment, Bruce had request the Presidio in SFO and other lush sites. We were assigned to Ft. Hood, Texas. Here too, we bonded with a great group of friends. Bruce worked under one of those friends, Doug Mang, who was at attorney. It was Doug who influenced Bruce to becoming a lawyer. Prior to meeting Doug, we had not realized that I would be teaching while Bruce would be going to law school. There are so many times that I recall and think, oh, yes, those were the days. One of those newly found friends was Wayne Marty. Of course Bruce would be close him. Wayne was in charge of the PX and package store! The weekend would arrive with a party. I recall Wayne inviting everyone in our courtyard apartments to the party with the pop of the champagne tops hitting our door ~ some would play the guitar, and we would all sing. I was to go back to St. Antonio this January. It made Bruce and I think of Wayne. He had invited us down to spend a weekend at his folk’s home in St. Antonio while stationed at Ft. Hood. We had lost touch with him 40 years ago, but he was a friend and we would find him! It seems Marty had become a General! I found his email and off went a message. Sadly I heard from Marty the first of January and had to tell him of Bruce’s passing. I had sent the email to a site Wayne hardly used. And yet that bond had not been broken. This is the beautiful message I received from Wayne ~ Patty I am so sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. I cannot imagine what that is like. He was too young for this to happen. I can only pray that you and your children will be consoled by the wonderful memories of Bruce and your life together. Although it has been a while, I still remember Bruce as one who always had a smile and had a wonderful disposition and was easy going. Really cool. I don't think Bruce said a harsh word to anyone at least when I was around. We all had a great time at Ft. Hood. All back from the war and ready to get our lives in order. I can see Bruce as a lawyer a good one to I bet. It would have been fun if we would have kept up with one another. Life slips by so quickly. Some times we forget that. I wish I would have found your first e-mail sooner, I too would have loved to reminisce with Bruce but fate has its ways. I will remember Bruce and you and your family in my prayers. Bruce is in good hands and God will take care of you and show you the way. With deepest regards. Wayne
