Piano Man

This story combines two previous entries to this great site in Bruce's memory. One of Patty's thoughts referred to Bruce's piano playing skills, the other from Ardyth recounted Bruce's occassional trips to visit us over Super Bowl weekend where many darts were thrown and many beverages consummed, siginificantly reducing the accuracy of said darts. During one of Bruce's visits the three of us decided that we would go to Jimmy's Del Bar, an upscale Supper Club in the Wisconsin Dells. As part of the ambiance of the place, the Hostess sang and there was a piano player at a baby grand. Having been there before we had asked for a table in the room where there was a roaring fire and the piano player was doing his thing. We probably had been seated for a good 15 or 20 minutes when Bruce (as only he could do)casually said "You know, that's my old piano teacher, Tommy Sheridan." My response was something like "Yeah, right!" We all know that twinkle that Bruce got in his eye when he knew that the next "life episode" was going to be fun and the twinkle was there! Once the piano player had finished his set, Bruce calmly walked up to him, put out his hand and said "Hiya, Tommy." A very surprised piano player jumped to his feet, exclaimed "Bruce Engelking! How have you been, what are you up to?" and old home week was in full swing. They must have talked for a good 10 minutes before Bruce brought him over to the table and introduced us. It appeared that they both truly enjoyed the reunion. My only regret is that Tommy didn't offer Bruce the opportunity to entertain the crowd. I would have liked to hear him play the boogie woogie Patty refered to. This whole incident could have been written off as a "It's a small world" incident, but the truth is that Bruce made it a small world by engageing everyone he met with kindness, enthusiasm, and an enduring sense of humor. He was easy to remember....Still is.
