A Sister-in-law's Memories

My first memories of Bruce are as a young good-looking teen. He was dating my little sister and added his "Wild Child" shouts to the weekends at Pearl Lake. I didn't learn till much later that Pat and Bruce used the cottage as their special rendezvous place during their college years. We were married within six months of each other and were surprised when he showed up on our wedding day. He couldn't get leave from basic training and just went AWOL to come to our wedding. When Bruce was shipped out for Vietnam as a helicopter pilot I was so excited that his ship was stopping at Okinawa where Rod and I were stationed. We got to the dock in plenty of time, but couldn't understand why the ship wasn't coming in. When I went in the office to find out, I got the third degree as Bruce wasn't suppose to have told me. His stay with us turned out to be just a few hours, but he did get a hamburger and banana cream pie. Each day in our travels in England, Bruce disappeared but then came back with a twinkle in his eye and a small bag of ice for our cocktail time. It didn't seem to matter that we were in a country that didn't believe in ice. As we moved from place to place, I got in the habit of calling Pat on Sunday. I always remember Bruce telling me not to forget to call. He loved to hear Pat laugh during our phone calls. And that is what I remember most about Bruce, how much he loved Pat and always wanted her to be happy. He was my "Tuce" and I will miss him dearly.
